One thing they think is so beautiful here is henna on your hands, arms, and feet. For all special occasions the women getting henna, and Eid is no exception. Our gatekeepers family lives in the garage of our apartment building. The day before Eid they told me I (Kristen) should come down that night for the oldest daughter to do henna on my hands. So, that's what I did.
The girl on the right is the oldest sister who did the henna, and the other three watched.
She learned how to do henna one year ago in school.
When the henna it put on your hands it's like paint. After about 20 minutes it dries and you put a little oil on it to help soften up the hard 'paint'. Then you brush it off your skin and it leaves an orangey-brown color where the paint was, which stays on for a week or so. The trick is to not wash your hands until the next morning, this way through the night the color will become darker on your hands.
The middle daughter (girl on the left) came to our home later that night to show us her new clothes we bought her for Eid. She'd just returned from shopping with her mother, and knowing I'd seen everyone else's clothes except hers she wanted to come show me. It was really sweet.
