Elijah loves his sister

Here are some photos of Elijah and Elise from our time back in the states:

It is still difficult for him not to try and play with her swing or bouncer.

Precious photo of him getting to her level. This may be the 1st time he started realizing that she
was here to stay and not leaving. :)

Our time in Germany meant that he knew she was coming with us...
we were definitely figuring out how they would interact in a fast paced setting.

This one is timeless.

Their interactions here in India... "Hey El-ise!" is his common greeting.

No friendship is complete without some good tickle time!

He is so sweet to her and protective... a good big brother.

Only in India # 40-42

Only in India #40:

Only in India do you see men
stack bicycles higher that one
would think possible with
every non-portable thing
known to man.

Here we see a man carrying
large stacks of egg crates!

What a difficult job and out-
standing feat to balance them!

Only in India #41: The constant use of tractors in construction.

Here are the kids sitting on one of the common sights in India, the tractor. Because of their smaller size and agility they are used in India for construction of many large buildings. We hear them often, especially at night when most trucks are allowed in the city because of the traffic problems they cause. This makes for very difficult nights when you hear them putting and bouncing over the large potholes. It makes us thankful when the power is on and the A/c's drown out the noise.

Only in India #42: The marriage want adds.

In a culture where marriage is arranged, it can be difficult to meet someone that meets the expectations of the family. It can be more difficult considering that they never meet until the wedding night. How can you meet the perfect someone that fits all the families needs and expectations if the only options are in one's own family and friend network?

Insert the marriage want adds... whatever you want in a husband or wife, write it down (in a small 3 column space :)  . Many list religion, caste, and age but one of the primary factors is education (especially for males). But if you can sneak a photo on the online sites, it can make or break you as well.

Some examples are as follows:

Chandra Depack seeks a wife with PHD in Biomechanics and exceptional skills in research.

Or...

Seeking a man with a thriving business in the IT field. Must be handsome and charming.
Also must own a nice sports car. :)

Thoughts Upon Arriving Back in India

Walking through the long hallways there in the Delhi airport felt so normal. I'd walked those halls many times, so it was a sweet taste of familiarity as compared to my first time arriving from America. However, I could already feel the increase in temperature and stuffiness compared to the plane, and especially the land I'd just come from.

We were thankful that all of our bags arrived, and all intact! Neal and I pushed the two carts, with all six of our bags, carry-ons, and Elise's carseat piled up, as I pulled Elijah backwards in the stroller. We were the sight to see...as we usually are even without our bags:)

We headed outside to find one of the old taxi vans that we could all cram into and BOOM...the air smacked us in the face. It felt like a sweaty locker room that hadn't been aired out in decades. It seemed to hit me this time even worse than the times before. I think it being monsoon season there was humidity coupled with the heat, polluted air, and bad smells, which amplify everything. But, the drive to the hotel was calm and there was a nice breeze coming through the windows. There's not much traffic of cars, motorcycles, bicycles, people, animals, etc. at one in the morning, so we enjoyed the calmness.

Elise got to lay on the cozy bed for the first time that Elijah has always loved.

Elijah was thrilled to introduce her to how fun it is to jump on the bed (like he's not supposed to do) and play in the middle of the pillows. To him that's the first thing you do when we arrive at the hotel in Delhi:)

Going to the front desk, breakfast area, and just walking through the hotel I was reminded of the theme song from Cheers, "Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name. And they're always glad you came." This is the feeling I always get from the staff, and it was a warm welcome back.

We took Elijah and Elise to see their pediatrician and get more shots, which is never fun for any of us. On our way there and back we saw a plethora of beggars, men, woman, and children (who are always the hardest to see). Although I hadn't forgotten the masses who beg, it had been so long since I'd been around it that it was like a fresh wound to my heart. "How can so many actually live this way? How can you actually help the masses? Why, why do the innocent children have to spend there days not in school but going to peoples windows asking for money?" We saw families sleeping by the road, with the little kids only wearing tops covered in dirt. Only God knows the answers to these questions...our disobedience in the garden brought about such things that raise such questions.

Sweet Elijah sat up tall in the car and smiled and waved to some of the men and boys. It was precious watching him express love to the people in such a simple way. Being a mom makes me so thankful that by Gods grace it's not my family on the street, but it's only Gods grace that I'm not, and not because His love is greater for me by any means.

This diverse country makes me so thankful that I know the Lord more than I ever have before because I'm reminded again, after just a couple days back, how I couldn't do it without Him.

It's good to be back cause Neal and I were both ready to come, but I wasn't looking forward to going back home to Kite City. For some reason Elijah and I had both caught a cold or something giving us a cough at night. I also just wasn't feeling good and almost passed out one evening. I was thinking about how tough it is to live in Kite City...the frustration of disorder, not having western food options only Indian unless I make it (I don't like Indian food except for two or three things that I can eat periodically, but not often), making everything from scratch after its been thoroughly cleaned for a while, holding my kids on the scooter as we drive through the crazy streets with crazy drivers, people and animals (this brings me more stress than anything else),  returning to the girl down stairs who knocks on my door three plus times a day to come play with Elijah (sometimes I'm fine with her coming in, but other times I don't want someone in my home for hours who rearranges my things, wants to see and know everything I'm doing, and won't leave when I politely say its time), having to think and speak to everyone in Urdu/Hindi knowing my mind and tongue was so struggling to speak, etc, etc. So many reasons I wasn't ready to return yet.

However, God in his gentle way healed me to the point where I wasn't feeling sick or like passing out (only coughing at night). He also helped strengthen my heart and strengthened me emotionally to where I was not only ready, but desiring to head home to Kite City. He covered all the things I was struggling with and in tears over just the day before. He's so sweet to me! Thank you Lord!

Traveling with Family in Germany

After our conference, our family, along with my (Kristen's) parents and sister took a week to visit a few different cities in Germany before we headed back to India (thank you dad for blessing us:). We had such a great time together!

The first city we visited was Koln. It's a big city with a huge historical cathedral. This was the main reason dad wanted us to visit this city.

This was the first place where Neal ate some German bratswurth, which is basically the best hot dog sausage ever. Elijah, who's come to love hot dogs since being in the states, thought it was really good as well...he wanted to eat the whole thing:)

The next city was Koblenz. This is where the two rivers, the mother river and the Rhein river meet together at German point. Here, at this famous place, there are flags that line the edge of the river, which you can see behind Neal and Elijah.

This monument is also at German point. It's hard to see though because of the position of the sun. However, Neal, Lauren, and I went up to the top of the monument to overlook the rivers. It was a beautiful sight!
This picture shows mom and Neal walking along the sidewalk by the river with the cool German architecture to the right. Isn't it so beautiful! I loved exercising on this path!

Then we went to Trier, which is known as a very old historical town that has the last standing, intact, Roman gate called the Porte Nigro.

There were many interesting things in this city, one of which was a lot of elephants all around the city. I'm not sure why the elephants were there, but Elijah really enjoyed them. He would see an elephant and then get real excited and point and say, "look another elephant."

Here's the Porte Nigro at the edge of the city.

Our hotel was just two doors down from the gate.

It was so chili while we were out eating that Elise needed her little jacket and blanket. She tends to get cold pretty easy, so we always made sure there was extra layers for her since it was colder there than in America (and for sure India).

The palace for the emperor was attached to the double Cathedrals. In front of it was a beautiful garden area with a walkway, beautiful flowers in an array of colors, statues, and lots of green grass. After living for 15 months in India I appreciate the lushes grass every time I see it. I've always loved it, but especially now...it's something I often long to see and have Elijah play in.

Behind the gardens was part of the original rock wall that was there during the time of the Romans. Dad especially loves the wall! He talks about it and wants a picture of all his kids that he brings to the wall. He's just a huge fan of the history that it represents and how long it has been standing.

We drove from Trier beside the Rhein river all the way to Heidelburg, which is mine and Neal's favorite city that we visited (Trier being the second favorite). Heidelburg is right on the river, which we love, and just a neat historical town.

This is the gate that is the entryway to the bridge that goes over the river.

The panorama from the bridge shows the tops of some of the  cathedrals, as well as the victorian style houses and hotels on either side of the river. It was amazingly beautiful. I can't imagine living there!

Our hotel we stayed in was the pink building to the right of the bridge in the panorama.

This panorama was taken on the opposite side of the river from where the main city was. Thank you God for places that show your beauty...help me to find your beauty when I return to India, and especially Kite City.

Lauren helped us with the kids often. While we were packing our bags she came to the room to hold Elise for us. Isn't this just a sweet picture of the two of them. Elise looked so cozy:)

This is in front of our hotel. All the streets not only in this city, but in basically every city we went to was made of stone. It looked so neat...wasn't really made for the stroller though:)
Our last evening in Heidlburg we ate some mega German food. Neal and Lauren both wanted to eat something that was very authentic, and Dad knew just the place. The restaurant attached to our hotel had some crazy menu items. There was stuff like goose drippings (what the mess, literally, is that?), wild boar, which is what Neal and Lauren ate, lots of animal livers, etc. It was another chili evening so dad borrowed one of Neal's new German scarfs, which I think looks really good on him, and the rest of us wore the blankets they provided for us.

The last city we went to was Meitz, which is a short train ride from the airport. Dad and my brothers have stayed there the last night as well in order to head to caught the plane the next day. Typically they just eat and sleep in the hotel instead of exploring the city because they usually don't have much time. However, since it was Elijah's 2nd birthday, and the place to eat in the hotel only had an hour window open, we decided to go out for dinner. We were so glad we did because we discovered all the beauty my dad and brothers had been missing.

Right as we walked outside in the gentle rain we noticed something that's always beautiful...a double rainbow painted across the sky. What a precious reminder from the Lord of His promises...and such a sweet time and day to remind us - Elijah's birthday, and our last day before returning to India.

Although we didn't end up eating at this place, I thought it was really cool with all the grape vines growing on the front, and over the terraces to the side.

My precious boy loved running around on the open cobblestone chasing the birds...or the "la-la" as he calls them.

I can't believe it was two years ago that he came into our lives. Thank you God for Elijah!

Here's some cool pictures that I took around the city. It was a really historical and beautiful place.

For dinner we found a pizza place since Elijah Loves pizza. By the time we found a place where we didn't have to use Euros to eat, it was pretty late and we were all really hungry, especially Elijah. While we waited to the food he got to open a couple of presents. He's a huge fan of bears, so one of the gifts my parents bought him was a little bear that was wearing a hoodie that says, "I love Germany."

Elijah had seen the same bear a couple days before in the market and wanted to hold it while I looked around...he was thrilled to have one of his own:) He gave him the biggest hug, and kept wanting to hug him through the night.

He loves getting into daddy's wallet and playing with his business cards and money. So, Neal and I got him a little wallet of his own with a key chain on top. Keys are another one of those things he loves.

He really enjoyed his birthday presents and pizza!

Here we all were back at the hotel for one last picture all together before flying out the next morning.

Lauren, Elijah, Elise (in the pouch) and I on the train riding into the airport. It was Lauren and Elise's first time on a train. Elijah had ridden one in India before, but this was the first time he knew what was going on, and he was so excited. He kept on telling Lauren and I, "I train, I train." He says everything as "I ...." He's gotten to where he's trying to speak in more sentences, but tends to leave out just a couple of words. He always includes the important stuff though:)

It was a great trip! I'm so thankful we had this time with my family...such a blessing!

Elise's Birth!

The morning of July 12th (mine and Neal's 5 year anniversary:), at 2 am I was awoken by my water breaking. Elise was due on July 6th, but obviously not yet ready to come. I'd been having hard contractions for 10 nights, but no baby yet. We, along with many others had been praying for Elise to come for quite a few different reasons: 1) We had our plane tickets booked to leave August 10th, and we had to get her passport and visa prior to us leaving. 2) I wanted to have a VBAC with Elise as opposed to a c-section like I had with Elijah...and she was measuring big and getting later and later, which aren't favorable for having a VBAC. 3) Neal and I wanted as much time with family after Elise was born.

But, even with all our reasoning and pleading before the Lord, He's still sovereign and He knows best! I'd asked for Him to bring Elise on her own by breaking my water so that I didn't have to choose a c-section date, since that's what my doctor was asking me to do... He answered my prayer!

When my water broke at 2 am, after calling the hospital we called my mom who was on standby at all times. She and my brother Joel rushed over to our apartment so that Joel could stay with Elijah while the rest of us headed to the hospital.

Above is mom and I in the parking lot of the hospital...time is now 2:30 am, on July 12th.

Almost all of our family got to come visit at one point or another. However, the early supporters were both moms and sisters Lauren and Rachel. They were all such sports coming early to cheer me on and pray for me. Later as I was trying to get my contractions closer together they took turns walking laps with me and pushing the pole my IV was hooked onto.

My doctor gave me till 6am the next morning to have the baby VBAC, and if I wasn't dilated to 5cm by then, she planned to do a c-section.

Much prayer took place before 6am, but my body only dilated to 1cm, even after 28 hours of labor in the hospital. There were some tears shed, but we trusted the Lord.

I was prepared and wheeled back to the surgery room  while Neal got his surgery clothes on. He looked like a doctor:)

At 6:58am on July 13th our precious baby girl, Elise Faith, was born!

She was a healthy 9 pounds and 7 ounces, and was 20 and a half inches long!

I couldn't help but cry when I heard the precious sound of life coming from her in the voice of her own cry. God is so amazing with how He brings sweet babies into the world!

Later that day Elijah got to meet his baby sister for the first time. It was precious seeing him be so inquisitive about her...although it didn't last too long. Honestly the room and all the cool wires, etc. that are in a hospital were way neater to discover for him at that moment:) Later he of course wanted to hug her and hold her. He's always been affectionate, so I loved watching this play out with Elise.

Here's Elise with her Nanna. My parents wanted to make sure they were there for the birth of Elise, so they stayed with us all night. Neal, my parents, and I tried to sleep for a few hours before she was born...it wasn't easy. We were all tired, but I was so thankful they wanted to stay with me...it meant so much.

Here's everyone in my family that got to come to the hospital to see us. Joel's girlfriend, Cassandra came to see us as well, so that was nice. Rebecca, Michael's wife was visiting her family up North and didn't get to come, as well as Daniel, Jessica and their four boys who were at home in South Carolina. They all got to visit with us and see Elise later.

One evening Neal's family took he and Elijah to eat at Moe's before coming to visit Elise and I. This was nice for Neal to get out and eat something other than hospital food. Elijah loves Moe's burritos, so it was a great choice for him.

We got Elise all dressed up in her smocked little pink dress to head home. It was hard to believe I was holding my baby girl...gosh I love her!

Thank you God for your perfect plan for Elise Faith, which was displayed in her birth! We love her!
